From a partisan company fighter to a prominent scientist – the journey of Vladimir Yurov, Rector of the Stalingrad Medical Institute

In the series “Rector on Rectors,” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Volgograd State Medical University (VSMU), we explore the life of Vladimir Yurov, the sixth head of the Stalingrad (Volgograd) Medical Institute.

During the Civil War, he fought to establish Soviet power near Astrakhan. In 1923, Vladimir Yurov earned his medical degree from Saratov University and worked as a district doctor, surgeon, and chief physician in hospitals across the Stalingrad region.

His work as an assistant at the surgical clinic of the Stalingrad Medical Institute provided material for his candidate’s dissertation.

At the outset of the Great Patriotic War, military doctor Yurov was called to the front. As a hospital surgeon, he saved the lives of soldiers. Together with his colleagues, he developed a system for drip blood transfusion under field conditions.
